Who invented the bicycle?

The first known form of a wheeled, human - powered vehicle was created long before the bicycle. In 1418, an Italian engineer, Giovanni de la Fontana,  constituted a human -powered device consisting of four wheels and a loop of 1817, a German aristocrat and inventor, Baron von Drais introduced a machine which he named 'The Draisine' after himself.

The two wheel of the Draisine were connected by a wooden bar. The rider rested part of his weight on a wooden arm rest in front and propelled himself by kicking the ground first with one foot and then with the other. He steered by turning a handle on the front wheel which was pivoted. However, this machine was very costly to produced. About 1840, a Scotsman named Macmillan took an old Draisine and put cranks on the axle of the rear wheel. These were connected by driving rods with pedals in front.  In the early 1860s, a wooden contraption with two steel wheels, pedals and fixed gear system known as a velocipede (fast foot) or a "bone shaker" was introduced. The name 'bicycle ' was first uses in 1865. Thereafter, many advance came till the bicycle reached the modern day' form.
